Have you listened to the lyrics of “Where is the Love?” by the Black Eyed Peas and JT? It’s a pretty solid song. These days we are all so busy with work and family life. This need for instant communication or entertainment keeps us attached to our phones and gadgets so much that we really don’t see the good things happening right in our own communities. We even email or text our neighbors instead of knocking on their door or cubical to communicate…and often nonverbals get lost in the wires!
Yo’, whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness and equality
Instead of spreading love we’re spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading us away from unity
He sings it so well…the lack of understanding leads away from unity! When we don’t have those face to face experiences, one on one or in a group, there is often a lack of understanding. We NEED to look away from our computers and into the radiating faces of actual people. Yes, technology is wonderful but even better is to see smiling faces and bright eyes of the people around you. Seeing those faces brings out our emotions – one of which may just be LOVE!
Consider doing some thing more in your community:
Support local merchants
Volunteer your skills to a community organization
Build a community garden
Plant a tree (get city permission first)
Host a potluck
Attend local sports games or musical performances
Gather to clean a park, graveyard or walkway.
Say ‘Hello’ to strangers
Read and listen to your local news
Write an editorial to the local paper
Look up from your cell and smile at those around you
When you interact in your community and support it, ultimately that support comes back to you! Grin and bare it – maybe even Love it!
