What are Healthy Fats and How Do They Help Me?

Do you enjoy having clear and positively glowing skin? Me too. Believe it or not the best way to go about achieving such skin is not washing it with the latest skin cleanser or lathering it with the most luscious lotions.

Nope. Believe it or not, eating fat is great for your skin. Keep in mind the type of fats you are eating is key. Fried and processed foods tend to be high in “bad” fats, like trans. These are the kind of fats that clog arteries, release free radicals in your body, and stimulate inflammation.

But GOOD fats, Omega 3 Fats – thank goodness – can prevent disease, help with weight loss, and give you radiating skin. It sounds too good to be true, but it’s not! What makes omega-3 fats special? They are an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body and affect the function of the cell receptors in these membranes. They provide the starting point for making hormones that regulate blood clotting, contraction and relaxation of artery walls, and inflammation. They also bind to receptors in cells that regulate genetic function. Likely due to these effects, omega-3 fats have been shown to help prevent heart disease and stroke, may help control lupus, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis, and may play protective roles in cancer and other conditions.

Not only are healthy fats good for your heart, they can do wonders for your waistline. We have been told to avoid fat if we want to lose weight. But, mounting research now shows that healthy fats are an essential part of a healthy metabolism.

Here’s a list of some great fats you can eat to feel great starting this week:

Animal Fats

Tallow, lard, fish oil, free range egg yolks

Plant Based

Avocado oil

Olive Oil

Coconut Oil

Other Good Fats

Organic Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. These types of dairy products are often easier to digest than milk and cheese. Be sure when purchasing yogurt, you are getting the sugar free varieties; ones that do not contain artificial sweeteners. Although dairy isn’t rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like fish or nuts, there are other valuable fats. According to Dr. Mercola, science reveals that the proportions of various fats in the diet are more important than any single fat. Fats are better at teamwork than they are going solo.

So don’t miss out on these fabulous fats! Fat is NOT bad. Far from it, actually. You’ll sleep better, your skin shall gleam, and your organs will love you. Omega-3’s will cause your headaches to run scared, bad moods to retreat, and frowns to turn upside down 😉
