Food Additives to Avoid

Natural foods are much healthier for you than foods that have additives. Here are some food additives that you should avoid:

  • Artificial sweeteners: Believed to be carcinogenic, artificial sweeteners account for more adverse reactions than all other food additives combined.

  • High fructose corn syrup: This additive increases you LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and contributes to the development of diabetes.

  • Monosodium glutamate (MSG): This flavor enhancer overexcites cells to the point of damage or death.

  • Trans fat: Research shows that trans fat increases LDL cholesterol levels and increases your risk of heart attacks, heart disease, and strokes.

  • Common food dyes: Artificial colorings may contribute to behavioral problems in children and reduce IQ levels.

  • Sodium sulphite: This preservative can cause headaches, breathing problems, rashes and death (in severe cases).

  • Sodium nitrate: Sodium nitrate has been linked to various types of cancer.

  • BHA and BHT: Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydrozyttoluene (BHT) affect the neurological system, alter behavior, and can cause cancer.

  • Sulphur dioxide: Sulphur additives are toxic and cause bronchial problems, low blood pressure, and anaphylactic shock. They have been prohibited in raw fruit and vegetables in the United States.

  • Potassium bromate: Used to increase volume in some breads, potassium bromate is known to cause cancer in animals. Even small amounts can create problems for humans.
